Cele opens ASRI hub at UKZN in Durban

South Africa has inaugurated a new advanced manufacturing facility and headquarters for the Aerospace Systems Research Institute at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Dr. Mlungisi Cele, Director-General of the Department of Science, Technology, and Innovation, led the opening ceremony, emphasizing the project's role in strengthening the national innovation system through collaboration between government, academia, and industry.

The institute, which evolved from a research group established in 2009, focuses on developing aerospace propulsion technologies, including hybrid rockets. Officials stated that the facility will provide hands-on training for a new generation of engineers and scientists, converting research into practical applications. Future ambitions include launching a suborbital rocket within five years.

This initiative is seen as a catalyst for economic growth, with the potential to create thousands of jobs in high-tech manufacturing and related sectors. It aligns with broader national goals to grow the domestic space industry.
