Chakwera Lets Corruption Run Rampant in Malawi

Malawi's Anti-Corruption Bureau faces serious problems that make it look weak and powerless. Many people believe President Lazarus Chakwera's government blocks the bureau from doing its job properly. The arrest of former bureau chief Martha Chizuma shocked everyone when top officials claimed they knew nothing about it. President Chakwera, former Security Minister Richard Chimwendo Banda, and Police Chief Merlyn Yolamu all said they were unaware of what happened. Their responses raised major questions about who really controls corruption investigations.

Former Vice President Saulos Chilima took bribes from British businessman Zuneth Sattar according to court documents. Chakwera decided to dismiss all corruption charges against Chilima despite strong evidence. The money helped buy more than 200 vehicles for the UTM political party. British courts have mentioned Chilima's name twice during Sattar's trial proceedings. Such actions show that powerful people escape punishment for their crimes.

Chakwera ended the long-running corruption case against former President Bakili Muluzi claiming it took too long. He also pardoned corruption convict Uladi Mussa which angered many citizens. The bureau dismissed charges against businessman Zuneth Sattar after some suspects returned stolen money. Former ministers like Wezzie Msukwa and Newton Kambala still wait for their trials to finish. Nobody has been arrested for stealing COVID-19 relief funds during the pandemic.
