Chamkila snub stuns fans as Emmys leave India empty

Imtiaz Ali's biographical drama about the late Punjabi singer failed to secure either of its two International Emmy nominations during Monday evening's ceremony in New York. The Netflix production competed unsuccessfully for recognition in both the TV movie category and for lead performer Diljit Dosanjh's portrayal, with British series Lost Boys and Fairies claiming the former honor while Spanish actor Oriol Pla captured the acting prize.

Despite leaving the awards empty-handed, Dosanjh and Ali generated significant attention on the red carpet, where the Punjabi star greeted photographers with his characteristic namaste gesture. Netflix India executives accompanied the creative team to the Manhattan event.

Ali previously characterized his film as exploring the passionate relationship between a performer and his craft rather than conventional romance. The director emphasized how the murdered musician's devotion to audiences transcended commercial considerations, driven by pure artistic compulsion that ultimately defined the character's essence and narrative focus.
