Chaos Looms Over G7 as Carney Scrambles

Prime Minister Mark Carney prepares to host world leaders at the G7 summit in Alberta. Canada aims to keep the group united even without issuing a joint statement. Former diplomat Peter Boehm says holding the organization together marks success. The challenge involves maintaining shared values among member nations. Leaders must work together on major global problems.

The G7 contains seven major democracies that have coordinated responses to world challenges for fifty years. Trump recently criticized international groups and imposed harmful trade tariffs. Israel and Iran exchanged missile attacks just days before the summit. Carney plans a private meeting with Trump on Monday morning. The talks could help improve relations between the neighboring countries.

Officials expect the summit might end without a traditional joint agreement. France issued a separate statement during 2019 when countries could not reach consensus. Canadian diplomats hint they prefer focused action over lengthy negotiations. Former ambassador Kerry Buck believes open conflict would damage the institution. Leaders will likely hold private meetings away from formal sessions.
