ChatGPT and Shopify now want your wallet

OpenAI and Shopify announced a partnership that enables direct purchases through ChatGPT without redirecting users to external websites. The collaboration introduces a Buy Now button within chat conversations when ChatGPT suggests products to customers. Shopify powers the transaction system and places its merchant inventory directly inside the artificial intelligence platform.

The initial launch limits the feature to single-item purchases in the United States, but the companies plan broader expansion. ChatGPT users can complete transactions for items ranging from athletic footwear to budget-conscious presents during product searches. The integration allows Shopify merchants to reach customers through one of the largest AI platforms without additional marketing efforts.

The partnership represents OpenAI's entry into commerce monetization through transaction commissions. ChatGPT transforms from a conversational assistant into a retail channel where recommendations lead directly to purchases. Shopify maintains its merchant base at the center of digital commerce, and OpenAI establishes a new revenue source beyond subscription fees.
