Chattogram toddler Humaiyra drowns in a drain, city blames rain chaos

A tiny three year old girl lost her life after tumbling into a dangerous open drain during heavy flooding on Wednesday afternoon. Mosammat Humaiyra became the latest victim of Chattogram's deadly waterlogged streets when torrential rains battered the Halishahar area. The little one slipped and vanished into the murky water around 3pm near a shop close to the Tasfia Community Centre in Anandipur. Rescue workers from Agrabad Fire Station battled for a full hour to pull her from the treacherous drain. Kamrul Islam from the fire station confirmed the child died while being rushed to hospital.

Heavy downpours had been hammering the port city all day long and turned the streets into a watery nightmare. Local residents watched helplessly as floodwater rose higher and higher around their homes and businesses. The relentless rain created severe waterlogging that made even simple walking extremely dangerous for everyone. Open drains became death traps as rushing water made them impossible to see clearly. Emergency crews worked frantically but could not save the young victim from drowning.

The tragic death adds another name to a growing list of similar accidents plaguing Chattogram. At least 14 people have died after falling into open canals and drains across the city during the past six years. Children make up several of these heartbreaking casualties that could have been prevented. The deadly pattern shows two deaths in 2020, five in 2021, three in 2023, three in 2024, and one fatality already recorded for the current year.
