ESSAU, Gambia - Chief George L. Sonko of Lower Nuimi wants the Niumi National Park protected. He says the forest must be preserved. The district will not allow illegal activities in the park.
Chief Sonko spoke to The Voice. He is worried about recent illegal logging. He says village leaders must stop selling parkland for homes and farms.
"My office will not compromise," Chief Sonko said. Illegal activities harm the environment and wildlife.
The chief also cares about livestock. People should not block cattle paths or start bushfires. He wants communities to protect plants and animals.
