ChildFund tackles Gambia's deforestation with 100,000 tree project

ChildFund The Gambia partnered with Plantation Nursery to establish an environmental program Thursday in Foni Sibanor. The organization plans to plant 100,000 fruit and native trees across educational institutions. Thirty pilot schools will participate initially before expanding operations to 1,700 institutions nationwide. Community agroforestry activities will engage families to strengthen food security and climate adaptation. Sponsored children will plant trees representing their international supporters.

Country Director Musu Kuta Komma emphasized trees' role as planetary oxygen producers maintaining ecological stability. The program integrates environmental sustainability into development work to reduce carbon emissions and environmental harm. Trees enhance air quality, support biodiversity, and strengthen ecosystem resilience beyond providing shade. National Assembly Member Bakary Badjie stressed life's dependence on trees while advocating proper care. Deputy Governor Musa Amul Nyassi highlighted trees' contributions to soil conservation, water management, and rural income generation through food, medicine, and economic opportunities.
