China mocks U.S. hypocrisy in $267 million Bahamas hospital loan row

Chinese officials have dismissed American criticism regarding Beijing's hospital construction financing in The Bahamas as completely unfounded. The Chinese Embassy released a defensive statement after U.S. diplomatic representatives questioned the strategic motivations behind the substantial medical facility investment. American Chargé d'Affaires Kim Furnish had expressed concerns about Chinese development projects potentially creating unsustainable financial burdens for Caribbean nations. Beijing's diplomatic mission challenged Washington to present alternative funding proposals for the western New Providence healthcare project. The dispute highlights growing tensions between major powers competing for regional influence through infrastructure development.

The Export-Import Bank of China provides approximately 195 million dollars of the total 267 million dollar hospital construction budget through favorable lending terms. Bahamian government officials rejected a competitive British financing offer earlier this year, stating the Chinese-backed project had progressed beyond the stage where alternative proposals could be considered. Prime Minister's Office Director of Communications Latrae Ramming emphasized Nassau's commitment to maintaining neutrality between competing global powers. Chinese representatives defended their lending practices as transparent and beneficial to Bahamian healthcare infrastructure development. The embassy characterized American concerns as remnants of outdated geopolitical thinking that fails to recognize legitimate development cooperation.

Beijing's diplomatic response accused Western financial institutions of creating more significant debt problems for developing nations than Chinese development banks. The embassy stressed that hospital construction represents purely cooperative development efforts without hidden political agendas. Chinese officials cited similar successful medical facility projects completed in Trinidad and Tobago plus Guyana as evidence of their commitment to Caribbean healthcare advancement.
