Chinese duo flip fate for Maasai Mara girls at Namunyak

Two Chinese entrepreneurs established a sanctuary for vulnerable girls near Kenya's Maasai Mara National Reserve. Tang Lin and Yuan Lin from Chongqing purchased an eco-lodge in 2019 before expanding their mission beyond tourism. Local volunteer Mary Silantoi approached them seeking support for girls escaping forced marriage and female genital mutilation. Government data shows girls aged 10-19 represent 30 percent of pregnant women in the region.

The pair acquired 15 acres near Aitong Town in June 2023 to build the Namunyak rescue center. The facility serves 29 girls with housing, education funding, utilities and security services. Authorities registered the organization officially in March 2024 as a community-based group. The Maasai word Namunyak translates to happiness, reflecting the center's mission to provide hope and safety.
