Chitungwiza faces weekend water outage for emergency repairs

People living in Chitungwiza will have no water this weekend after city workers turned off the main pump. The local council announced Friday evening that repairs must happen at Prince Edward Water Treatment Plant. Workers shut down the pump at 4:50 PM to fix a broken water pipe. The town will stay dry until Monday when water starts flowing again. Officials posted the news on social media just hours before the shutdown.

St Mary's neighborhood will receive water first when service returns Monday morning. The council promised other areas like Zengeza, Unit L, Seke and Nyatsime will follow later. Nobody knows exactly when those communities will see water return to their taps. The announcement did not give specific times for different parts of town. Residents must wait for updates about their neighborhoods.

Many people felt angry about the last-minute warning from city officials. Some complained they had no time to fill containers or prepare for the outage. Others said the council should provide better schedules for planned maintenance work. A few residents supported the decision because repairs help prevent bigger problems. Most agreed the timing could have been better.

Chitungwiza has dealt with water problems for many years. The town sits about 30 kilometers from Harare and struggles with reliable service. Families often use private wells, water trucks or storage tanks during outages. The Prince Edward plant serves both Chitungwiza and parts of Harare. City leaders asked people to save any stored water and report illegal connections during the shutdown.
