Zimbabwe Expands Title Deeds Program to Benefit 65,000 Residents.
The Kwangu/Ngakwami Presidential Title Deeds Programme has entered its implementation phase. It is set to provide property rights to 65,000 residents across the Chitungwiza, Southlea Park, and Epworth communities.
Harare Metropolitan Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Charles Tavengwa announced that Epworth will receive 4,500 title deeds this month. The program has established field offices in Chitungwiza and Southlea Park to process applications. Residents can start their applications through a WhatsApp chatbot at 0787 590 569.
The initiative targets 55,000 municipal tenants in Chitungwiza, with document issuance beginning this month. Southlea Park's first phase aims to reach 9,600 beneficiaries. In Epworth, 2,000 deeds are ready for distribution, with an additional 2,500 planned for the Glenwood and Glenwood Extension areas.
Minister Tavengwa addressed previous obstacles, noting that informal settlements faced challenges with double allocations, pending surveys, incorrect records, and misinformation from land barons. The Chitungwiza Town Council approved the program last August and signed a formal agreement on September 13, 2024.
Chitungwiza Mayor Rosaria Mangoma emphasized the program's importance for residents' financial access and economic well-being. The Southlea Park settlement, managed by the Order Housing Consortium of 56 public and private companies, has completed engineering designs for essential infrastructure.
Engineer Elijah Chifamba reported that residents will access municipal water through scheduled weekly deliveries to storage sites. A new sewage treatment plant will be built near the Manyame River, incorporating advanced wastewater technology. The project includes plans for a trunk sewer system and a 13-kilometer water main connecting Hopley reservoirs to Lochinvar.
