Johannesburg braces for water outages as Rand Water begins maintenance

Johannesburg Water told residents to brace for sketchy water pressure while Rand Water handles maintenance across three separate windows stretching into early January, and the utility company rolled out its own tanker fleet to keep hospitals plus neighborhoods supplied when taps run dry. The shutdown hits bulk infrastructure feeding zones like Midrand, Sandton, Soweto, and Lenasia through systems at Palmiet, Zwartkopjes, Daleside, and Eikenhof.

The board said the maintenance cannot be avoided if they want long-term reliability upgrades, but they activated contingency plans with daily updates and technical fixes to soften the blow. The new tanker fleet cuts down its reliance on outside contractors, and it fits into their TAS24 turnaround strategy for stabilizing operations.

Officials asked everyone to conserve water and stay patient while crews monitor reservoir levels during the work periods.
