Chiwenga calls out Zanu-PF grifters at Heroes Acre burial

Zimbabwe's vice president just fired another shot at his own party's corrupt elite. Constantino Chiwenga, the former army general who led the coup against Robert Mugabe, used a heroes' burial to slam the wealthy clique, known as zvigananda, pushing for President Emmerson Mnangagwa to stay in power past 2028. He questioned what legacy the current leadership was building while ordinary citizens sank into poverty, directly invoking the unfulfilled promises of the 2017 takeover.

Political observers saw the speech as a sharp message to the military and public who supported the coup, now disillusioned by rampant graft and private accumulation of wealth by those close to power. Analysts noted Chiwenga has never publicly backed the so-called 2030 agenda to extend Mnangagwa's rule, instead consistently railing against ill-gotten gains and moral decay. Exiled figures like Saviour Kasukuwere framed his remarks as a patriotic call for ethical leadership aligned with liberation values, not a personal endorsement of any individual.

Critics, however, called the speech empty optics without concrete action, pointing out that Chiwenga had presented dossiers on corruption to Mnangagwa before with no visible results. A Zanu PF insider suggested the vice president was speaking to a growing faction within the party frustrated by the influence of moneybags and neglected service delivery. The address sparked debate on social media, with some noting these critiques only surface when Mnangagwa is absent, leading to questions about the president's role in enabling the systemic plunder. Across the board, analysts agreed Chiwenga's words echoed widespread public anger over a governance culture that prioritizes elite enrichment amid national suffering.
