Zimbabwe fury as Gata crowned hero while Makova snubbed at Heroes Acre

Zimbabwe's hero recognition system faces fierce backlash after officials granted national hero status to former electricity boss Sydney Gata while snubbing liberation war veteran Colonel Claudius Makova. Gata received burial at National Heroes Acre despite presiding over ZESA during massive power outages and financial chaos. Makova got liberation war hero status and a state-assisted funeral at his Chiredzi farm instead of the national shrine. War veterans from Masvingo Province slammed the decision as political revenge against Makova. Anonymous sources blamed Makova's association with Zimbabwe People First and former vice president Joice Mujuru for his exclusion.

Colonel Makova joined the independence struggle in 1977 under the chimurenga name George Tichaitora Muchadura before crossing into Mozambique. Military training took him to Tanzania and Romania where he completed advanced courses by 1982. The Zimbabwe National Army commissioned him as Lieutenant and he climbed through ranks to become Colonel by 1995. His decorated career included public relations roles and multiple service medals including the Liberation Medal and Independence Medal. Academic achievements ranged from journalism diplomas to a psychology degree from the University of Zimbabwe.

The Bikita West Member of Parliament dedicated himself to community development by constructing schools and medical clinics throughout his constituency. Makova's military service spanned decades with positions as Public Relations Director and Officer Commanding Shows and Displays. Liberation war comrades argue that genuine heroes face systematic exclusion from recognition programs while alive and after death. Political connections appear to determine hero status more than actual battlefield contributions or national service records.
