Chow Kon Yeow begs firms not to flee Penang over US tariffs

Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow demands the federal government fight harder against crushing US trade tariffs. The American government plans to slap Malaysian exports with brutal 25 percent taxes starting August 1. Chow blasted the Ministry of International Trade and Industry for weak negotiating tactics during a speech at the Penang Chip Design Academy launch. He warned that current strategies fall short and urged officials to get tougher with American trade representatives. The chief minister stressed that Malaysia must build a stronger case to protect local industries and workers.

Worried manufacturers already consider fleeing Malaysia to escape the punishing tariffs. Chow pleaded with these companies to stay put instead of jumping ship to other countries. He argued that relocating brings fresh challenges and uncertainty that might prove worse than staying. The chief minister pointed out that negotiations continue and outcomes remain unclear. He urged businesses to wait and see what happens before making drastic moves.

Different industries face varying levels of impact from the new tariffs. Some sectors dodge the bullet completely while others get hammered by the full 25 percent hit. Chow admitted the tariff rate sounds high but expressed hope that negotiations might bring relief. Meanwhile Penang keeps building strength through talent development and faster business approval processes. The state promises investors can start operations and begin exporting within 12 months of deciding to set up shop.
