CHRAJ bans ex-GRA boss for 5 years over corruption

Ghana's anti-corruption watchdog has barred a former tax authority chief from government service after convicting him of procurement violations and misuse of power related to vehicle contracts.

The Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice found Ammishaddai Owusu-Amoah guilty of breaching public procurement laws and ethical standards during his tenure as Commissioner-General at the Ghana Revenue Authority. Investigators determined he approved inflated contract values, allowed conflicts of interest and bypassed competitive bidding requirements when purchasing automobiles and equipment for the agency. The commission ordered him disqualified from any public position for five years and mandated repayment of funds improperly gained through the irregular agreements.

The investigation began after complaints and audit reviews exposed questionable practices in how the revenue agency handled acquisitions. Officials said the former administrator exploited his authority for private advantage while ignoring established protocols meant to ensure fairness and fiscal responsibility. The commission characterized its action as essential to rebuilding trust in civil service operations and cautioned that officials managing taxpayer resources face consequences for misconduct. Authorities urged all agencies to strengthen internal safeguards and enhance procurement monitoring to prevent similar violations.
