Church builds Chipinge’s first uni, dream pedals to life

A church group in Zimbabwe started building the first university Chipinge has seen since independence and locals are hyped after waiting 45 years for higher education to come back. The United Church of Christ took over a massive plot in St Kelvin and plans to open Gazaland University by next year with programs like disaster management, IT, pastoral counseling and manufacturing engineering.

The vision came from youth fellowship members who rode bikes 560km back in 1998 to push the idea but construction only kicked off in late 2023. Rev John Matiza and the foundation committee said they want 6,000 students on campus eventually, with more degree options getting added over time. The government backed the move and regulators are working on the provisional charter while the church asks investors to help fund what became a way bigger project than anyone expected.
