A northern Uganda entertainer died after spending months hospitalized with injuries his family says resulted from an encounter with law enforcement in July. Bonny Awula, who performed comedy under the name Lady Sonia, passed away on Friday, Nov. 1, 2025 at Lira regional referral hospital. The performer from Ojungu Cell said a dispute at a Kitgum Municipality drinking establishment on July 15 led to his detention and physical harm when he grabbed someone who struck him without realizing the person worked as a criminal investigations officer. Officers held him for five days and he developed swelling and paralysis in his right arm that required transfer to Lira medical center on Aug. 5.
