DR Congo wants to put former leader Joseph Kabila on trial. Officials seek to remove his legal protection as they claim he helps rebels fighting in eastern parts of the country. The justice minister says they have proof of war crimes against both regular people and soldiers. Kabila denies these charges and has stayed outside Congo since late 2023, mostly living in South Africa.
The government hopes to finish a peace agreement soon with Rwanda about the M23 rebels who took over large areas this year. Both countries promised to create a draft deal by May 2 under American supervision. Kabila ran Congo for almost twenty years after his father died in 2001. He refused to leave when his term ended but finally stepped down after elections in 2018.
His political party recently lost its right to operate. The government also plans to take away property belonging to Kabila and party leaders. A party official claims President Tshisekedi fears Kabila coming back home. He blames the current president for problems in eastern Congo.
