Cop jailed over meme, sues for free speech rights

A retired cop got jailed for over a month because of a Facebook meme. Larry Bushart, 61, filed a federal lawsuit against Perry County, Tennessee, its sheriff, and an investigator. They arrested him for sharing a meme about a vigil featuring a quote from Donald Trump. Authorities claimed it threatened a school.

Bushart was charged with threatening mass violence and held on a two-million-dollar bond. He stayed in jail for thirty seven days before the charge got dropped. His lawsuit says officials misrepresented the post and violated his free speech.

He argues the arrest wrecked his finances and reputation. The case alleges the arrest was based on fear, not facts. Bushart is now seeking damages for the ordeal.
