Corrupt ZESA boss finally laid to rest, nation fumes

Zimbabweans must turn out to say goodbye to national hero Dr Sydney Gata at his burial tomorrow. President Mnangagwa will lead the ceremony at National Heroes Acre. Officials moved Dr Gata's body from Manyame Airbase to his Chipangai farm ahead of today's provincial program. The Ministry of Home Affairs wants citizens to give the Zesa Holdings executive chairman a proper send-off. Dr Gata died from a brief illness last Thursday and was married to Deputy Minister Angeline Gata.

The provincial program starts at 8am and ends around 11:30am at the Chipangai farm. After that ceremony, officials will fly the body back to Harare around 1:30pm. Zesa staff requested time to bid farewell at the Zesa Training Centre. The body will rest at Charles Gumbo Barracks before Wednesday's burial. Family members held a service at the Gata home where his grandson praised him as kind and loving.

President Mnangagwa called Dr Gata a giant during last Saturday's funeral wake. The president said Dr Gata served the country well without complaints despite facing criticism. Dr Gata started as a lecturer at Chelsea College of Aeronautical Engineering. He taught at City University before returning to lecture at University of Zimbabwe. He became the first black general manager of Electricity Supply Company and later served as Zesa chief executive and board member.
