County mourns in one long convoy

The bodies of 25 individuals who died in the Kerio Valley mudslides were transported from a mortuary in Eldoret for a joint funeral in Elgeyo Marakwet County. The mass service and burial were scheduled for St Maurus Academy in Murkutwo. A survivor, Charles Chelimo, who lost eight family members, reported that the disaster destroyed all their property and livestock.

Official figures indicate the mudslides killed 38 people, injured over 50, and left eight others missing. Governor Wisley Rotich described the event as an overwhelming tragedy for the county. Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen, who attended separate burials for eight victims, called the loss of life heartbreaking and promised government action.

Local leaders, including MPs Kangogo Bowen and Timothy Toroitich, have demanded the urgent relocation of all families residing in high-risk zones along the escarpments. Governor Rotich further proposed that the government take over these vulnerable areas for reforestation and provide residents with alternative land.
