Court Clears Bebe Cool to Probe Muhangi YouTube Dispute

The court gave musician Bebe Cool permission for police to check comedian Alex Muhangi's YouTube channels. Magistrate Nicholas Aisu made this decision Thursday after Bebe accused Muhangi of stealing his content across 15 videos, including some shown on NTV. Bebe filed complaints claiming Muhangi broke copyright laws between December 2017 and December 2024. Police inspector Ricky Wasswa leads the investigation, with state attorney Mercy Yamangusho helping request court approval.

Muhangi fought against the request, calling Bebe "greedy and confused" because he had already paid him for using the content. The judge dismissed these objections as mere attempts to block justice. He said the application had proper evidence backing it up. The court allowed police to inspect everything from view counts to comments on Muhangi's channels. Muhangi's lawyer, Robert Rutaro, suggested settling outside court, but Bebe refused to talk.

The judge mentioned copyright law states offenders face fines up to 2 million shillings or four years in jail. He said both civil and criminal penalties exist under various sections of the Copyright Act. The court has full authority in this case, according to the ruling. Each side must pay their legal costs themselves as they continue the legal battle.
