Court Crushes Zapu Gambit, Gukurahundi Hearings Survive

Opposition party ZAPU lost its court battle against the Gukurahundi hearings yesterday. The High Court tossed out their emergency request to stop the process. Justice Mutevedzi ruled the case lacked urgency. ZAPU boss Sibangilizwe Nkomo had tried blocking the traditional leaders from running these important meetings. The court decision clears the way for chiefs to continue their work.

Nkomo challenged a 2019 agreement that put chiefs in charge of the hearings. He claimed the traditional leaders could not stay neutral during the process. The opposition leader worried chiefs would make things worse instead of better. His legal move had delayed the start of these crucial community discussions. Court officials quickly rejected his arguments about unfair treatment.

Chief Mtshane Khumalo runs the hearing program across affected areas. He said his team feels relieved the legal roadblock has been removed. Chiefs have received their vehicles and fuel supplies for traveling to remote villages. Special recording equipment has been handed out to document victim stories. The traditional leaders are ready to begin listening sessions immediately.

These hearings address violence from the early 1980s that killed thousands of people. Most deaths happened in Matabeleland and parts of Midlands provinces during civil unrest. President Mnangagwa launched this healing program last year to help families find closure. The government wants local chiefs to lead because they understand their communities best. Traditional leaders will provide safe spaces for survivors to share their experiences.
