Rukungiri High Court Crushes Case Backlog Nightmare

Uganda opened a new high court building in Rukungiri on Friday. The government spent 1.6 billion shillings on the project. Hebron Investment Company built the facility. The court serves people from Rukungiri and Kanungu districts. Officials say residents can access justice without traveling far distances.

The new court handles many different cases. Staff recorded 640 criminal matters and 930 civil disputes since opening. They also processed 180 family problems and 185 land conflicts. Court workers transferred 328 cases from Kabale High Court. Most transferred cases reached final decisions already.

Deputy Chief Justice Flavian Zeija spoke at the opening ceremony. He told court workers to serve people with honesty and respect. Poor service makes citizens angry and damages the justice system. The judge wants staff to schedule hearings properly and maintain good records. He warned against corruption and delays.

Local leaders praised the new courthouse. They said it helps President Museveni's goal of bringing services closer to citizens. Officials promised to investigate any bribery or unfair treatment. The government plans more courts across Uganda. Leaders want every district to have a chief magistrate's court.
