Court keeps Jo Sidhu disbarred as bar talks culture change

A senior lawyer lost his career after courts confirmed he preyed on a junior colleague. The High Court refused to overturn the disbarment of Jo Sidhu KC regarding sexual misconduct charges involving an aspiring barrister. Mr Justice Choudhury upheld the original tribunal decision that stripped the silk of his status. This ruling emphasizes that regulators are finally punishing abuses where power imbalances exist.

Judges found that Sidhu invited a mini-pupil to his hotel room under the guise of discussing casework. He then insisted she sleep in his bed before initiating unwanted sexual contact. Choudhury dismissed all appeal attempts while stating that a suspension was insufficient punishment for using authority to pressure a young woman into gratifying his desires.

Beth Hale from CM Murray noted that severe consequences like this will likely force behavioral shifts within the profession. She pointed out that barristers lack standard employee rights, making it hard to fight back against misconduct. These events align with the Harman review, which exposed widespread harassment issues throughout the legal sector.

Kirsty Brimelow KC pledged to implement safety recommendations during her first speech as Bar Council chair. She insisted that junior colleagues deserve a safe environment free from unacceptable behavior. The Bar Standards Board thanked witnesses for stepping up. Sidhu retained Vikram Sachdeva KC and Shakespeare Martineau against Fiona Horlick KC representing the regulator, but legal efforts failed to save him.
