Court locks up Hufke for killing Stellenbosch teen

A 20-year-old man received a life sentence for killing a university student during a robbery attempt that turned violent in Stellenbosch, South Africa. Rudolf Hufke was convicted of murdering Jesse Mitchell, who was celebrating his 19th birthday when he was fatally stabbed in the neck during the October 2023 attack. The Western Cape High Court issued its ruling on Monday, Nov. 3, 2025, after Hufke entered a guilty plea. Judge Daniel Thulare also imposed a 15-year sentence for robbery with aggravating circumstances, which will run at the same time as the life term.

Mitchell was a student at Stellenbosch University when Hufke approached him with robbery as his intent. The confrontation escalated quickly and ended with the fatal stabbing. Authorities arrested Hufke shortly after the incident, and he confessed to the crime in October 2024. Evidence presented in court revealed that Hufke committed multiple robberies that evening while under the influence of drugs.

The victim's family expressed that although the court decision cannot reverse their loss, they hope the severe punishment will discourage similar acts of violence. Under South African law, Hufke must serve at least 25 years before becoming eligible for parole consideration.
