Stellenbosch assault sparks campus protest

A reported assault at Stellenbosch University has triggered student protests and drawn attention to a national crisis of gender-based violence. The university confirmed the incident at Russel Botman House and stated it is supporting the victim and cooperating with a police investigation. This event follows similar recent demonstrations at the University of the Witwatersrand, where a rape allegation led to protests and the suspension of a student representative.

These campus movements occur just before a planned nationwide shutdown organized by the group Women for Change. The protest aims to pressure the government to declare femicide a national disaster, highlighting statistics showing South Africa's femicide rate is significantly higher than the global average. The government has acknowledged the severity of the issue through its ongoing GBVF Acceleration Programme.
