Court orders police constable held for 21 days in Ojwang's death case

A Nairobi judge decided that police officer James Mukhwana must stay locked up for three weeks. The court wants investigators to look deeper into how blogger Albert Ojwang died. Magistrate Robinson Ondieki said the holding period starts from June 13 and counts every day. The judge mentioned that people can ask for changes if something new happens. He used international court rules to back up his decision.

The case seems very serious and affects the officer's freedom rights under the constitution. The magistrate spoke harshly about the police cell and the vehicle they used. He said the cell looked like a place for dead bodies and the car seemed like a funeral vehicle. Officers took Ojwang's body to City Mortuary through Mbagathi Hospital. The judge thinks the police tried to hide what really happened.

The magistrate compared this death to George Floyd's killing in America. He warned that young people face more of these terrible events. The judge said people cannot use lack of knowledge as an excuse anymore. He called poverty a wrong thing and prejudice evil. The case has caught lots of public attention according to investigation reports.

Police oversight investigators are checking what happened to Ojwang at Central Police Station. Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat stepped down from his job during the investigation. Lagat gave his statement to help investigators learn more about the case. His complaint led to Ojwang getting arrested in the first place. Police took Ojwang from his home in Homa Bay county to Nairobi where he died.
