Court puts Salasya hate speech deal on ice until he complies

A politician's hate speech deal just got shredded by a judge. A court in Nairobi slammed the brakes on an agreement between MP Peter Salasya and the National Cohesion and Integration Commission. Senior Resident Magistrate Paul Mutai found the Mumias East lawmaker hadn't actually done what he promised under the settlement.

The deal required Salasya to make a public apology and join a social media campaign for peace. Prosecutors were ready to drop the case once the agreement took effect. Magistrate Mutai refused to sign off, stating full compliance had to happen first.

He directed evidence of the completed terms to be submitted for review. The court will then decide whether to adopt the agreement and allow the case withdrawal. The ruling keeps the hate speech charges against Peter Salasya active for now.
