Critics fault Jacob Mudenda over Matabeleland tollgates

Parliament Speaker Jacob Mudenda has faced criticism after proposing additional tollgates across Matabeleland North to generate revenue for road infrastructure development. The official suggested increasing collection points to five between Bulawayo and Hwange while adding two facilities along the Cross-Dete to Binga corridor during budget discussions held in Bulawayo.

Mthwakazi Republic Party leader Mqondisi Moyo condemned the proposal as exploitative, arguing the region requires comprehensive development frameworks and equitable investment rather than increased taxation on deteriorating road networks. Critics noted the irony of Mudenda advocating for revenue collection mechanisms while remaining silent on systemic underdevelopment affecting communities lacking clean water access and functional transportation infrastructure.

Former Parliament Speaker Lovemore Moyo and educator Ben Moyo questioned the allocation transparency of existing tollgate revenues, calling for devolution of funds to provinces where collections occur rather than centralized distribution that fails to address regional infrastructure deficits.
