The Commonwealth Parliamentary Association welcomed back Cross River State House of Assembly after years away. Cross River lawmakers lost their membership because they could not pay required fees and other money owed. The assembly missed out on educational conferences and other member benefits during this time. Speaker Elvert Ayambem announced the good news during a Friday meeting celebrating two years of the current assembly. Cross River paid most of what they owed and earned their spot back.
Ayambem promised to clear all remaining debts soon. He wants assembly members to attend Commonwealth conferences and learn from other countries. The speaker said sharing knowledge with lawmakers from different nations helps improve their work. Cross River assembly plans better oversight of government spending and department activities. They want to make sure all agencies follow budget rules properly.
The assembly passed 30 new laws during the past two years. Governor Otu signed most of these bills into law across the state. Nine more proposed laws currently move through different reading stages. Ayambem stressed the importance of effective lawmaking and government monitoring. The assembly commits to meeting all future obligations to outside organizations.
