Chittagong Urea Fertiliser Limited restarted operations on Sunday following a seven-month shutdown caused by natural gas shortages. Factory management confirmed urea manufacturing resumed at 3:30 a.m. after Karnaphuli Gas Distribution Company restored supply on October 19, enabling necessary equipment checks.
The state-owned Chattogram facility lost approximately 30 million taka daily during its closure beginning April 11. Officials stated consistent gas delivery of 48 to 52 million cubic feet daily remains essential for sustained production. Bangladesh requires 2.6 million metric tons of urea annually, with domestic plants, including CUFL, supplying only one million metric tons. The Anwara-based factory now produces 1,200 metric tons of urea and 310,000 metric tons of ammonia yearly, down from its original capacity. Persistent supply interruptions and mechanical challenges limited last year's output to 2.5 million metric tons nationally.
