DA MP hits Manamela over SETA hires

Democratic Alliance lawmaker Karabo Khakhau asked the National Assembly Portfolio Committee on Higher Education and Training to summon Minister Buti Manamela for questioning about recent appointments to the Sector Education and Training Authorities. Khakhau wrote to committee chair TW Letsie on Thursday, October 30, 2025, alleging the minister selected political allies as Accounting Authorities and chief executives.

The opposition party claims Manamela followed patterns established by former minister Nobuhle Nkabane, who faced criticism for similar appointments. On Wednesday, October 2, Manamela announced new Accounting Authorities for 21 skills development agencies, which manage billions of rands from employer levies. The Democratic Alliance called the appointments politically motivated rather than merit-based.

South Africa's unemployment rate stands at 32 percent according to Statistics SA. Khakhau requested urgent discussions with Manamela, the department, and the National Skills Authority about selection procedures. The lawmaker previously contacted the Public Service Commission in September 2025 about administrators facing fraud allegations.
