DA wants Lamola to take Iran to the UN rights council

The DA is pressuring Minister Ronald Lamola to flag Iran at the UN immediately after security forces reportedly wiped out over 2000 protesters during recent crackdowns. Opposition leaders sent a formal letter demanding he report these abuses to the Human Rights Council. They argue the state cannot ignore such flagrant suppression of dissent while claiming to champion freedom.

Internal conflict keeps heating up within the Government of National Unity regarding foreign policy alignment. This clash follows the ANC demanding action against the US for invading Venezuela while staying quiet on Russia attacking Ukraine. Ryan Smith from the DA claims the ruling party faces a moral test on whether to support oppressed populations or the regimes crushing them.

Tensions spiked further because Iranian naval ships are hanging around Cape Town for military drills. That presence risks triggering trade tariffs from President Donald Trump against anyone doing business with Tehran. Critics suggest these cozy relations with a new BRICS member look suspicious, given the violent crackdowns happening domestically.

Smith believes South Africa has a duty to speak up on international platforms, considering its historical struggles. He insists the administration must not turn a blind eye to authoritarian violence just to please political partners.
