Dalung alleges corruption cripples Nigerian football

Former Youth and Sports Development Minister Solomon Dalung has alleged that systemic corruption within Nigerian football administration continues to undermine the national team's international competitiveness. Writing on social media, Dalung linked repeated World Cup qualification failures since 2018 to entrenched practices involving financial misappropriation and lack of accountability among governing officials.

Dalung claimed his reform efforts during his ministerial tenure faced organized resistance from stakeholders who portrayed oversight measures as external interference and appealed to FIFA for protection. He disclosed that a technical panel comprising former federation leaders, coaches and private sector representatives recommended a voluntary six-month withdrawal from international competition to allow FIFA oversight of structural reorganization. The proposal reportedly gained ministerial approval but collapsed after presidential illness led to its disavowal through direct communication with FIFA.

The former minister warned that the absence of fundamental governance reforms addressing transparency and financial controls, and persistent institutional failures, would continue to define Nigerian football outcomes.
