Damascus church bombing by Islamic State leaves 22 dead, 59 injured

A terrorist from the Islamic State group killed over 22 people and hurt almost 60 others during an attack on a church. The deadly strike happened at a place of worship inside Damascus, the main city of Syria. Government workers confirmed the terrible numbers after the bombing took place. The bomber targeted St. Elias Church on Sunday. This church sits inside the Al-Douweila area of Damascus.

Syria's interior ministry posted details about how the attack happened. The bomber walked into the church and started shooting people. After firing shots, the attacker set off explosives they wore on their body. Police and security teams quickly arrived at the church. They blocked off the whole area around the building and special investigators started looking for clues.

Interior Minister Anas Khattab said these terrible acts would not stop Syria from working toward peace. He added that Syrians would stay united against anyone trying to hurt their safety. Health officials first said nine people died and 13 got hurt. However, those numbers kept going up as more victims were found. Doctors and health workers met with people who survived the attack.

The Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch shared disturbing photos from inside the church. These pictures showed blood on the floors and what looked like body parts. Church leaders asked people to pray for those who died and those who got hurt. They also wanted comfort for church members dealing with this tragedy.

A United Nations official condemned the attack and called it a horrible crime. The American Ambassador to Syria also expressed sadness about what happened. He said these cowardly acts have no place as Syrians try to build a peaceful future together.
