Kano Sports Bus Horror Leaves 22 Dead

Nigeria's Kano State made Monday a day for sadness after 22 people died in a bus crash. The team was coming back from a sports contest when their bus flipped over near Dakatsalle town. Athletes and coaches died when the vehicle went off the road Saturday. Nine other people got hurt but one person walked away safe. The group had traveled over 1000 kilometers from the National Sports Festival.

Sports leaders called the crash heartbreaking for Nigerian athletics. The dead team members had just competed for their state with honor. Kano State won 29 medals at the contest but some winners died in the accident. Families started planning funerals for the victims. The government gave each family one million naira and food supplies.

Nigerian sports teams worry about road safety after this crash. Teams must drive long distances because flying costs too much money. State officials said their buses work well and all athletes have insurance. Sports commissioners promised stronger safety rules for future contests. All state teams must have full insurance coverage from the start.
