Daniel Munyanyi was arrested for killing two Zaka police officers

A cop killer who gunned down two CID detectives and seriously wounded three others got dragged out of hiding by members of the public in Bikita District on Monday.

Daniel Munyanyi arrested after deadly shootout in Zaka
  • Daniel Munyanyi, 50, of Ndume Village under Chief Ndanga in Zaka, was nabbed in the Nyika area of Bikita.
  • Zimbabwe Republic Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the Monday afternoon arrest.
  • Residents of Nyika physically apprehended Munyanyi and handed him over to the police.
  • The firearm allegedly used in the killings was also recovered.
Two CID detectives killed in early-morning ambush
  • Detective Constables Bernard Chimbeke, 37, and McKenzie Chitsowe, 43, were shot dead at around 5 am on March 1.
  • Both officers were part of a team tracking Munyanyi over armed robbery cases in Harare and the surrounding areas.
  • Munyanyi allegedly carried out the attack right in his home village in Zaka District.
  • Nyathi praised Nyika residents for their role in getting the suspect off the streets.
Three more detectives badly wounded in the firefight
  • Three other detectives sustained gunshot wounds during the same shootout.
  • One officer was shot in the thigh, and another took bullets in both legs.
  • A third detective suffered injuries serious enough to require the amputation of one leg.
  • Munyanyi had gone into hiding after the attack before being picked up the following day.
