Darfur crisis deepens as ICC's Nazhat Shameem Khan warns of war crimes

ICC prosecutors slammed war criminals terrorizing Sudan with shocking accusations of mass atrocities. Deputy prosecutor Nazhat Shameem Khan blasted perpetrators during heated UN Security Council testimony on Thursday. She declared investigators found solid evidence of war crimes and crimes against humanity ripping through Darfur region. Khan painted a horrific picture of systematic violence targeting innocent civilians across the war-torn territory. Her office gathered damning testimony from refugees who escaped the bloodbath and fled into neighboring Chad.

Brutal militias weaponize rape and sexual violence against helpless victims while blocking food and water supplies. Hospitals face deliberate attacks as gunmen hunt down medical workers trying to save lives. Aid convoys get ambushed by armed groups who steal supplies meant for starving families. Kidnappers snatch people off streets and demand ransom payments from desperate relatives. Famine spreads like wildfire as relief organizations cannot reach communities trapped by fighting.

The court launched fresh investigations after civil war erupted between government forces and rebel paramilitaries during 2023. Janjaweed militia groups faced genocide charges two decades ago for previous massacres across the vast western region. Security Council members referred the Darfur crisis to international prosecutors back in 2005 following earlier bloodshed. Judges prepare to announce their first major verdict against warlord Ali Kosheib whose trial wrapped up last year. Khan promised more prosecutions would follow as investigators build cases against other suspected war criminals.
