Dawda Jallow confesses to gutting Gambia's constitution

Gambia's Foreign Minister Sering Modou Njie outlined his diplomatic vision during a breakfast meeting with international representatives at the Atlantic Hotel. The minister emphasized that trust and dialogue would form the foundation of the country's foreign relations strategy. Njie brought extensive credentials to the position, having served two decades in the military and nine years in diplomatic posts. His approach aims to strengthen partnerships across trade, security, development and humanitarian sectors. The gathering marked the start of more regular engagement between the ministry and foreign missions.

Permanent Secretary Lang Yabou characterized Gambia as a regional beacon for democracy and human rights amid widespread challenges. He encouraged diplomatic partners to maintain support for the nation's democratic transition and institutional development. Attorney General Dawda Jallow updated attendees on constitutional reform efforts, noting that political disagreements had blocked the initial draft in 2020. The government responded by launching mediation initiatives and stakeholder dialogue sessions. Officials retained approximately 85 percent of the original constitutional framework through this process.

International representatives responded positively to Njie's emphasis on building trust through consistent communication. Several diplomats highlighted the importance of maintaining donor confidence during the country's ongoing institutional rebuilding phase. The Foreign Minister assured partners that his ministry would remain accessible for direct discussions on both national priorities and global concerns. This commitment to transparency reflects the government's broader strategy for strengthening international relationships.
