Deadly EC and KZN Floods Wipe Out 200 Schools

Severe storms destroyed over 200 schools across Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal provinces. Strong winds damaged 138 schools in KwaZulu-Natal and 74 schools in Eastern Cape. Teachers stopped exams at many schools because classrooms became unsafe for students. Heavy rains swept away 13 children who rode a school bus across a flooded bridge. The tragedy happened at Efata Bridge when water levels rose rapidly around the vehicle.

Zodwa Ndwandwe leads KwaMadlala Primary School where five classrooms lost their roofs during the storms. Broken electrical wires created dangerous conditions that forced officials to cancel student exams. Smangele Ncwane manages Othandweni Junior Primary School where asbestos problems appeared after roof damage. Education officials visited damaged schools but provided limited help for repairs. Many principals spend personal money to fix problems at their schools.

The death count from Mthatha floods reached 90 people as rescue teams continue searching for missing victims. President Cyril Ramaphosa visited the disaster area and promised government assistance for displaced families. Twenty-eight bridges collapsed from flood waters that destroyed homes across informal settlements. Weather services warned residents about continued flooding and transportation problems. Emergency crews work around the clock to help communities recover from the devastating weather.
