Deputy Head Jailed for School Sports Gear Scandal

A court sentenced Avondale deputy headmistress Roseline Boroma to serve one year in jail yesterday for corruption charges. She bypassed proper school purchasing rules when she selected Frammatic Engineering to install sports equipment. The Harare magistrate gave her a two-year sentence but suspended one year if she maintains good behavior. Boroma denied wrongdoing, claiming the sports department requested the company, but prosecutors proved otherwise.

Government school rules require departments to submit purchase requests through proper channels for approval by the headmaster. The sports department head had only mentioned needing basketball and netball posts verbally. Without filing the correct paperwork or informing the headmistress, Boroma arranged for Frammatic Engineering to install the equipment at the school grounds. The sports department staff expressed surprise when the company put up the $1,780 worth of equipment they had never formally requested. School leaders reported the matter to police after learning about the unauthorized purchase.
