Developers plan mass PS4 support drop in 2025 as PS5 hits 80M units shipped

Publishers plan to abandon PlayStation 4 support during 2026 as the current console generation extends its historically long cross-platform development period. HoYoverse recently announced Genshin Impact would cease PlayStation 4 compatibility, joining multiple major live service developers considering similar decisions. Technical limitations and expanding PlayStation 5 install bases drive these changes across the gaming industry.

Sony has shipped 80.3 million PlayStation 5 units, providing sufficient market penetration for publishers to focus exclusively on current-generation hardware. Developers cite both technical constraints and economic factors when explaining their transition away from previous-generation systems. The extended cross-generation period has left many players questioning whether the current console generation truly began.

Industry rumors suggest PlayStation 6 and Xbox Next systems may arrive within two years. Sony reportedly targets 4K gaming at 120 frames per second while maintaining affordable pricing. Microsoft plans to leverage Magnus APU technology for diverse system configurations that compete directly with gaming computers rather than traditional consoles.
