Dhaka burns Tk700 a pop on expat votes with new EC app

Bangladesh will introduce a mobile application for overseas voters during November's third week, Election Commissioner Brig Gen (retd) Abul Fazal Md Sanaullah announced Wednesday. The official made this statement during a virtual conference with the Bangladesh High Commission in London from Election Commission headquarters. The government allocates approximately Tk700 per overseas ballot, with Tk500 designated for international postage and Tk200 for additional costs. Statistical evidence reveals that merely 2.7 percent of expatriates register for voting, while under 30 percent of registered voters actually participate.

Earlier postal voting attempts encountered problems due to insufficient time between symbol allocation and election dates. The commission developed a hybrid approach to address these challenges by modifying ballot design and procedures. Overseas citizens will receive advance ballots containing party symbols along with voting instructions and declaration forms. After Bangladesh finalizes candidate lists and symbols, voters can verify information through the application or commission website before marking ballots and returning them.
