Diogo Jota and his brother were laid to rest in a private ceremony in Portugal

Football fans said goodbye to Diogo Jota and Andre Silva on Saturday at a church ceremony. The former Liverpool star and his brother received their final send-off at Igreja Matriz de Gondomar Catholic Church back home in Portugal. Family members kept the service private, but crowds of supporters gathered outside the building anyway. Officials had to put up barriers around the cemetery after people rushed toward the burial site. The emotional scenes showed how much the community loved both men.

The brothers lost their lives when their sports car crashed and burst into flames early Thursday morning. Their Lamborghini went off the road somewhere in Northwest Spain during what should have been a routine drive. Emergency crews could not save either man from the burning wreckage. The tragic accident shocked everyone who knew the talented siblings.

Liverpool players traveled to Portugal to honor their former teammate at the funeral. Several members of the Portugal national team also attended the service to pay their respects. Football stars from across Europe sent messages of support to the grieving family. The sport lost two bright young talents when the accident happened. Tributes poured in from clubs and fans around the world after news of their deaths spread.
