Divya Dutta posted some throwback pics from Shyam Benegal's 90th birthday party that happened right before he died last month. The gathering had basically every legendary Indian cinema person you can think of, like Shabana Azmi, Naseeruddin Shah, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, and Kunal Kapoor, all hanging out together in Mumbai.
The director passed away from kidney problems just nine days after that celebration went down. Benegal built his whole reputation on making critically acclaimed films back in the seventies, and his debut movie, Ankur, with Shabana Azmi, scored him a National Award right out of the gate.
His last project was this 2023 biopic about Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and he racked up multiple National Awards throughout his career for stuff like Bhumika and Junoon. Dutta captioned her post with some emotional gratitude about working on his sets and learning from him.
