Dr Abhilaksh Likhi discovers Indian fishers need ice boxes

India produces 8 percent of global fish output as the world's second-largest producer, and the government announced on Saturday that aquaculture production ranks second worldwide. Federal authorities invested 38,572 crore rupees in fisheries programs since 2015, and total output reached 195 lakh tonnes with an annual growth of 8.74 percent. Seafood exports climbed to 60,524 crore rupees in 2023-24.

The Fisheries Department organized virtual meetings from April through September for more than 15,000 stakeholders from 34 states and union territories. Secretary Abhilaksh Likhi led discussions spanning coastal, inland, hilly, island, and northeastern areas. Participants requested quality fish seed, brood banks, affordable feed, local mills, transport facilities, cage culture, mini hatcheries, ice boxes, cold storage, and solar integration.

Fishermen praised free transponder installations that deliver potential fishing zone advisories, weather alerts, cyclone updates, and safer navigation routes. The ministry established 34 fisheries production and processing clusters nationwide to strengthen species-specific value chains through advanced technologies. Stakeholders proposed drone transport for live fish, satellite safety applications, and zone advisories.
