DR Congo beat Nigeria on penalties in Morocco playoff

The Democratic Republic of Congo secured a spot in the intercontinental playoff round after defeating Nigeria 4-3 in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 deadlock through extra time in Morocco. Substitute goalkeeper Timothy Fayulu, who entered just before the shootout began, made two crucial saves before captain Chancel Mbemba converted the winning penalty.

Frank Onyeka put the Super Eagles in front during the opening minutes, but Meschack Elia found an equalizer for the Congolese side. The Central African nation will participate in March's intercontinental playoff, where six teams will compete for two remaining spots at the expanded 48-team tournament.
